Yes, yes, I know that this is a tad late, but well, I got married right after SXSW, quit my job and moved to the East Coast (Brooklyn that is) shortly thereafter, so I’ve been a little busy and delayed in getting to this post.  I’m sure you were holding your breath the whole time, so I’m letting you know you can stop holding it if you’re still alive, which if that’s the case, why are you reading this blog….you should be capitalizing on this pretty awesome if not superhuman talent.  But now that you’re here and you’ve been holding your breath, just read my review of this past year’s SXSW.

As with every SXSW, there were plenty of hype bands buzzing around all the kids.  This year’s was primarily about Amy Winehouse and there was no shortage of seeing her…..she played a show or two EVERYDAY (or at least was scheduled to, but bailed on a couple) of SXSW and that still wasn’t enough for some people (you know who you are).

I had my usual excel spreadsheet to help me navigate the schedule and maximize my exposure.  I saw a little over 40 bands including Amy Winehouse, which I enjoyed, but felt the hype was more than the actual performance. These are the bands that left an impression on me and I’m still thinking about 2 1/2 months later:

  • Sunshine Underground- super catchy and amazing live performance; their first U.S. Show
  • Holy F#@k & Friends
  • Jamie T- Arctic Monkeys with a reggae beat
  • Ra Ra Riot- Click here to read about their upcoming EP
  • Elvis Perkins
  • Cold War Kids-worth the hype and covered "Change is A Comin’" with Elvis’ band, which totaled 15 people on stage and was AMAZING! a revival of sorts
  • The Gossip -The White Stripes if Jack White sang like Patti LaBelle mixed with Janis Joplin- the lead singer eventually took off her dress…..she’s very comfortable with her body even if she is a little heavier
  • Datarock
Datarock- dressed in all red jumpsuits….looked like the posters for Human Giant, electronic rock with that Norwegian touch
  • Humangiant
Human Giant (ahem, sadly not in red jumpsuits for their party)
  • The Watson Twins- there’s a reason Jenny Lewis made an entire album with them….a sound from a simpler time
  • Nicole Atkins
  • Bill Callahan- an amazing voice…very calming and reminiscent of West Virginia).
  • And of course the old favorite The Faint…..great as always.  I can’t wait for their new music!

I also must make mention of a couple of panels that I attended that were highly entertaining.  First, David Byrne discussing the future of record labels.  He is just kooky, but in a very endearing way.  He was extremely prepared with a powerpoint presentation, but a little Mad Hatter in his explanations of what they meant.

I also attended the panel called "What do you want out of life" with Britt Daniel, Tom Morello, Taylor Hanson, Matt Hale (Aqualung), Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), and Corey Rusk (Co-founder of Touch & Go Records).  It was interesting to get mainly artists’ perspectives on the ups and downs of their careers and the state of the business.  Brit was tight lipped as per usual, but overall, everyone had a bit to say.

The last panel I attended was the interview with Iggy Pop and The Stooges.  And while their last album may leave something to be desired, their interview was everything I had hoped for and more.  They discussed their beginnings and gave all of these great stories of living together and being pretty much a commune and eating, sleeping, and breathing music.  Plus, interesting factoid about Iggy that I was unaware of was that in his late teens he was a hired drummer for blues and jazz bands in Detroit and played something like 3-5 sets a night, 5 days a week.  What discipline!

Overall, it was a good experience (how can it not be when you’re in Austin and surrounded by bands from all over the world) and I walked away having checked out a ton of bands I wanted to see live.

Now, get out there and go use this holding your breath talent for good.

I was lucky enough to catch Ra Ra Riot’s show at this past year’s SXSW.  After hearing a little bit about them, I was happy to finally see them live and they did not disappoint!  They have a lot of fun on stage with their 6 person band spanning the spectrum of instruments.  They’re sound is fun and energy infectious.   They have drawn the comparison to Arcade Fire, but I don’t completely think that’s accurate….they definitely have the same fun and use the same instrumentation at times, but their sound is a little different.

They have just announced the official release date of their self-titled EP for July 10th (distributed by The Rebel Group), and will be heading out on tour hitting a town near you in support of it.  Click here to listen to some of their music.  Click here to go their official web site and download "Each Year".

Coachella_2007_1As you may or may not know, Coachella has announced their line-up for April 27th-29th, 2007.  The line-up is pretty stellar, but the big news seems to be that they have ADDED a 3rd day.  I guess it’s all about Supply & Demand….maybe bands were clamoring for the chance to play at this uber-cool festival and who is going to say no to Bjork…..she’s rumored to get a little pissy.  I’m personally looking forward to see The Arcarde Fire performing their new material, but I’m sure many attendees will be sticking around on Sunday night rather than getting an early start back to LA this year since Coachella is the stage for Rage Against the Machine reuniting……for a band who was so principled, I thought they would never get past their differences and reunite, but money has way with people.  I’m also excited about Jesus & the Mary Chain, Tokyo Police Club, The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, LCD Soundsystem, and all of Sunday’s line-up.  Stay tuned for more Coachella News!

Stagecoach, the biggest country music festival that California’s seen in ages (maybe ever?), is coming soon.  And you know what, I think I’m going.

I know what you’re thinking — Kyle, when did you drink the country Kool-aid?  But look at the lineup — it’s got people like Neko Case and Bela Fleck (appearing with Abagail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet), not to mention legends like Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris.

Honestly, depending on the Coachella 2007 bill, I am even considering only attending Stagecoach.  That bill has a lot of acts I’d love to see, and two straight weekends in the desert would be an endurance challenge.

But who am I kidding?  There’s no way I can miss attending at least some piece of the first three-day Coachella.

Stagecoach_mainposter The great people of Coachella have decided to try their hand at another genre of music that doesn’t fall under the Coachella music umbrella…it’s country!  Now, you may be thinking why would we even be reporting this.  Well, I actually have a pretty healthy appreciation of country music being from Texas, so it’s nice to see that Coachella is bringing the same great environment to country music and bringing country to SoCal (especially, since LA got rid of the only country music station, KZLA, last year).  While there are some mainstream country artists like George Strait, Brooks & Dunn, and Alan Jackson, you can still find indie alt country acts performing there such as Neko Case, Drive By Truckers, Nickel Creek, and Alejandro Escovedo.  AND, of course, WILLIE NELSON is performing, which I would make the trip just to see him play.  As with Coachella, I think they have done a good job of maintaining diversity among the genre.  Click here to check out all the deets and check back here for the Coachella announcement later this month we hope.

Damien, will you play my wedding?  You manage to play with such intense passion and have some of the most poetic lyrics out there, that it would be perfect for my wedding ceremony.  Oh, what’s that?  You’re a little busy right now playing your new material and are on tour for the foreseeable future?  No worries, I can work around your schedule.

I have seen Damien Rice perform 5 times since O came out and have listened to his albums endlessly, and I still can’t get enough of his music and performances.  This includes his show at the Troubadour in 2004 where he played 3 hours and Herbie Hancock sat in at times.  This last time was at the Orpheum Theater in downtown LA.  I can’t think of a better venue for this talented troubadour.  Every facet of this historic theater seems to properly honor the music from Damien and his talented band.   Lisa Hannigan and him were just as amazing as always and they did justice to the material from the new album 9.   Most noteworthy, were two things that happened during the performance.  1) It was Damien’s B-day on 12/7 and the opening band The Swell Season gave him a Mexican wrestling mask as their gift to him.  Damien performed "Me, My Yoke and I" with it on…..very fittingly.  It’s hard enough to just breathe in those masks, but to sing a pretty rockin’ song in it is even harder. Mexican_wrestling_mask 2)  Half way through the set, Damien started to play a song and then stopped and said he needed to leave the stage for a moment and would let his band cover for him.  Vyvienne as always gladly took the reigns with Lisa singing backup on what seemed to be a recently penned original piece called "Random Man".  It was very fun and funny and she kept it light with a childlike energy.  When Damien returned to stage, she very sweetly said, "Damien never listens to my songs, but I always listen to his."  Damien strapped back on his guitar and explained that something very unusual had happened to him……he was like a horse falling asleep while standing up.  He was hit by jet lag all of sudden and started falling asleep on stage!   I guess it’s like the saying goes, "He is so good, he can do it in his sleep."  His trip off stage was to down some sake to jump start the engine.  He then performed another hour without incident and with the intensity he’s known for.  Yes, people, he is that good.

The Set List (Approx 1 hour and 50 mins):
Delicate
Woman Like a Man
9 Crimes (See the video here)
Me, My yoke and I
Rootless Tree
Cannonball
The Animals Were Gone (my personal fav)
A New Song (not the title, an actual new song that I haven’t heard before)
Random Man- Vyvienne’s new original song with Lisa on bgv
Elephant
Volcano
Grey Room
I Remember (briefly covered "All Along The Watchtower" during this song)

Encore
Lisa sang a song w/o Damien, not sure the title
Accidental Babies
Blower’s Daughter

Thanks for the wonderful show (again) Damien, Lisa, Vyvienne, Shane, and Tom.  And if you have some free time, the wedding band slot is still open.
